History: The Building of First Christian Church

First Church 1886

For the first twenty years of FCC's life, there was no "official" church building. The congregation met in homes, halls, and school houses, and had various ministers. In March of 1885, Pastor W. H. Kern called for a special business meeting to discuss building a permanent church home. Following a strenuous campaign of soliciting funds, self denial, and zealous labor on the part of committee members and congregation, the present site at the corner of East High and Tonica Streets was secured and construction work began. The new church was dedicated on January 3, 1886.

100th Anniversary of First Christian Church

Twenty-six years later, plans were made to enlarge the church, which entailed moving the whole building to the west, rotating it a half-turn, and veneering it with brick to incorporate it into the new building design. This ground-breaking ceremony was held on September 28, 1912. The Sunday school classes raised money for the project by having a contest to see who could collect a mile of pennies and nickels first. The dedication for the newly remodeled church was on March 1, 1914. Elder C. H. Hands wrote, concerning this accomplishment, "May it be a 'Church Home,' where God's family may gather in exultant praise and thanksgiving; a home where the stranger may find a hearty welcome; and the prodigal a refuge from the fierce storm of distrust and misspent ambition. Out of Zion may streams issue forth for the healing power and saving virtue to generations yet unborn."

Rev Robert Paddack

In 1980, Reverend Bob Paddack, along with several members from First Christian Church, went to a conference in Ft. Collins, Colorado. Upon their return, the group all had a vision of building a new church in Mason City; however, not everyone was on board, and the vision remained just a dream.

In 2000, a group assembled to discuss the possibility of building a new church. The building committee visited several newer churches, collected resources, and hired an architect. In 2002 we purchased 18 acres of land on which to build a new church, but again, the time to build was still was not right. Many events took place during the time span of 2002-2005 which took priority over the building project.

In 2007, Joe Briseno answered God's call and became our new minister. The Growth team, along with the congregation, agreed that it was time to build. New Location Same FoundationWe broke ground for the new location on Main Street on April 27, 2008. So here we stand at one of the most exciting times in our church history. What will our descendants remember about us? I pray that it would be something similar to what was said about our predecessors who went before us almost 100 years ago:

"Following the occupation of the new building, the congregation took on new life and with increased zeal, set out to win others to Jesus Christ and enlist them in building a New Testament church in Mason City."

On Sunday, August 30, 2009, the new building was dedicated to the glory of God, for the cause of Christ, and the advancement of His Kingdom.
